I was visiting the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank today as I seem to do on a monthly basis lately and I had an opportunity to speak with Carol from CBC Calgary Radio about the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank. I mentioned how many times I had gone and how many times you are allowed to go in a year. I mentioned I was unemployed and that I appreciated the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank . I talked about my unemployment; specifically when asked if I was looking for work. "Yes every day.", I replied. I was able to plug the website a couple of times and my last job as a Core Technician and the fact that my previous employer kept me working as long as possible, without giving away the name of the company. I introduced myself with my first name so that is a given to anyone that hears the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank Christmas food drive spots played during the Morning Show on CBC Calary Radio about whom my last employer was. Besides my resume is common information right about now. It feels good to be writing and working with something in my stomach because the last two days were pretty scarce.
I maybe didn't mention it enough about how thankful I am for having an organization like the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank available to me. I have barely made sixteen thousand dollars this year so far and it seems like the entire year has been a struggle just to keep from visiting the Mustard Seed on a daily basis. I really don't know how employers believe that ten-dollars an hour is an honest wage anymore. I had the same discussion with an employer the other day and the bottom line for that person seemed to be money. Frankly his reply was "Well if they can't afford to work for ten dollars an hour then maybe they should move on." I made ten dollars an hour sixteen years ago; so my question to you is "Has the cost of living gone up during that time?" So I am grateful for the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank they have allowed me to keep my dreams alive and for me that is all I have. When Carol asked me if I get depressed I answered no. I don't think depressed is the right characterization for someone relying on the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank for support. Frustrated is a better descriptor as you work your one hundred and sixty or more hours a month and really have nothing much to show for it except the receipt when the Landlord comes around plus whatever you can manage to put into bettering yourself. I'm not perfect by any means I smoke and I am quite addicted to it. That alone is enough to cause me financial difficulties. I live alone and have no family to rely on either. Family is so important and I'm really convinced that the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank keeps many families together when times are tough. |
